Overview of ASTM B163 MONEL 400 Tube
Monel 400 is a nickel-copper alloy with excellent corrosion resistance in various substances. Monel400 is characterized by excellent general corrosion resistance, excellent malleability and its equivalent to high toughness. The alloy has been used in a variety of applications. It has good resistance to rapidly flowing micro-water or sea surface. When degassing sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid, it is particularly corrosion resistant. The alloy is slightly magnetic at room temperature. Monel400 is widely used in organic chemistry, crude oil and deep-sea industrial production.
Monel400 alloy tubes are more resistant to corrosion than commercial pure nickel (UNS N02200) under reducing conditions, and more resistant to corrosion than refined copper alloys under oxidizing conditions. However, monel400 alloy tubes are not suitable for highly oxidizing acids, such as nitric acid or nitrite. In this environment, high chromium stainless steel should be considered to use UNS S44627 or 310 (UNS S31000) steel.
