ASTM A213 TP304 Specification for Seamless Ferritic and Austenitic Alloy Steel Boiler, Heat Exchanger, and Superheater Tubes. ASTM A213 seamless tubes are mainly used as superheater, boiler, heat exchanger tubes. ASME SA213 TP304 pipe is made from austenitic grades with 2% to 3% molybdenum added to further improve corrosion resistance. ASTM A213 TP304 Tubing sizes and thicknesses are typically supplied to their specifications from 1/8 in. [3.2 mm] ID to 5 in. [127 mm] OD with a minimum wall thickness of 0.015 to 0.500 in [0.4 to 12.7 mm] (inclusive of )thickness. ASTM A213 UNS S30400 tubing in other diameters may be supplied provided that such tubing meets all other requirements of this specification.
Stainless steel is often referred to as corrosion resistant steel - it does not stain, corrode or rust as easily as regular carbon steel. However, it would be misleading to say that it is corrosion resistant. It differs significantly from standard carbon steel due to its chromium content, the presence of which limits surface corrosion, whereas carbon steel rusts when exposed to air and any moisture in the atmosphere. Stainless steel sheets are a natural choice where low maintenance and corrosion resistance are required and are used in a variety of applications from the cladding or fascia of modern buildings to the food hygiene industry due to their antimicrobial qualities. Stainless Steel Seamless (SMLS) pipe is formed by drawing a solid billet over a perforated rod to form a hollow shell. Since the manufacturing process does not include any welding, seamless pipes are considered stronger and more reliable. Historically, seamless pipe has been considered more pressure-resistant than other types and is generally more readily available than welded pipe.
Grade 310 combines excellent high temperature performance with good ductility and solderability and is designed for high temperature applications. In the absence of reducing sulfur gas, it resists oxidation in continuous operation at temperatures up to 1150°C. It can also be used for intermittent service at temperatures up to 1040°C.
Grade 310S (UNS S31008) is used when the application environment involves wet corrosive agents in a temperature range lower than that normally considered "hot" service. The lower carbon content of 310S does reduce its high temperature strength compared to 310.
Like other austenitic grades, these grades have excellent toughness even down to low temperatures, although other grades are often used in this environment.
Grade 310L (and a proprietary version of this grade) is a version of 310 with a maximum carbon content of 0.03% and is sometimes used in very specific corrosive environments, such as urea production.
